The GI tract, also called the gut, involves the stomach, intestines and all organs involved in digestion. How can the GI tract influence these seemingly unrelated health problems?

About 70 percent of our immune system is located in the gut. When it becomes inflamed, our immune system doesn’t work properly and other problems present themselves. Inflammation occurs when we expose our bodies to foods it’s not meant to absorb. For example, the body cannot properly digest the chemicals from processed foods. The natural pH balance of the GI tract is thrown off by too much red meat and not enough fruits and vegetables. Some foods, such as the trans fats in chips, damage the gut and disrupt its cell lining. This is called ‘Leaky Gut Syndrome’.  Without proper nutrition, the “good” bacteria found in the gut cannot grow and abnormal bacteria and fungi start to grow. As a result, individuals with the syndrome can experience bloating, cramping, fatigue and other symptoms.
